Welcome to another Game of the Week post. This round we move back across the pond to the
Civil War Battles series with
Campaign Chickamauga! This title is on sale for 25% off now through Sunday September 29th.
By late 1862, the war in the west was proving to be a very difficult theater of operations for the Confederacy. The disastrous defeats at Fort Donelson and Shiloh were especially damaging to the southern cause. But hope and spirit prevailed. A new plan was developed. Invade Kentucky, force the bulk of the Union army out of Tennessee, defeat it and encourage Kentuckians to join the Confederacy. Campaign Chickamauga recreates the campaigns and battles of late 1862 and 1863. These battles would help decide the fate of both Kentucky and Tennessee and, ultimately, the Union.

Campaign Chickamauga includes 250 scenarios plus a Getting Started tutorial. It should be noted however that there are several versions of each scenario. One for head-to-head play, another for play against the AI and then further weather variants to add in weather effects to given situations - such as increased movement costs and reduced visibility for example. Additionally, all scenarios that start with "cam" in their file name are those used by the Campaign function of the game.
The major battles included in this title are:
Perryville
Murfreesboro (Stones River)
Frankfort
Chickamauga
Chattanooga
For a description of the various scenarios included with the game plus information on how the project was brought together as well as pictures from the battlefields check out the
Design Notes.
The game includes four different campaigns, and like the stand-alone scenarios each one of them has a weather variant.
Like all other titles in the
Civil War Battles series, the game includes Campaign and Scenario Editors that allow players to customize their experience. There are 5 different view levels - three 2D and two 3D (which will be displayed in the screen shots later in this post). It also provides multiple play options, including play against the computer AI, Play by E-mail (PBEM), LAN & Internet "live" play as well as two-player hot seat.
The version in our Store is the latest and greatest - 4.05.1. This series, like most of the others, has undergone extensive updating over the last few years, with new functionality being introduced as well as adjustments being made to the AI routines to provide a more challenging opponent. You can read about some of the update cycles in the following blog posts.
4.05,
4.04.1, and
4.04.
Ok, we'll now move along to some suggested reading on this topic.
Finally we have The WAR OF THE REBELLION - A Compilation of the Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies - 128 Volumes on DVD.
Moving along to video content, the channel SmartWargames did a review and playthrough of the game in 2022. You can view it
here.
And that brings us to screen shots from within the game.
As we bring the post to a conclusion we want to mention the Civil War Battles specific section of
our forums, where you can discuss this title, or any others in the series.
When you are ready, head on over to the
Campaign Chickamauga product page and pick up a copy for yourself.

Looks good may buy.
Simple, as a civil war buff this game is a true must have. Excellent representation of these battles of the west. The forgotten, area of the war. With the questionable commanders. ( Not Grant of course ) But the brave men.
