Game of the Week, February 17 - 23

Strap in as we head for the skies in this weeks Game of the Week - Modern Air Power: War Over the Mideast. This title will be on sale for 25% off normal pricing now through Sunday, February 23rd.

Since ancient times the Mideast has witnessed continuous clashes between religions, cultures and nations. Israel's reestablishment in 1948 attracted refugees from the world over but also generated much resentment. For the next sixty years conflicts would rage with Israel at the center. 1956, '67 & '73 would be years of major conflict and are all covered in this title. Additionally actions in Lebanon ('82) and assorted strikes in '85, '06 & '07 are also covered. The violent Mideast chariot clashes continue thousands of years after the Biblical era, but modern chariots now flash across the sky trailing fire and raining down thunder and lightning on the enemy below.

This series was one of John Tiller's favorites, and one he worked extensively on and over the years with the US Air Force. The lead scenario designer for the series was Mo Morgan, who also worked with the Air Force in managing the use of these applications in their environment. You can read a bit more about that in the Design Notes.

War Over the Mideast covers modern air combat in this theater from 1956 - 2007. Naturally covering that breadth of time you will see a wide variety of weapon systems and air operations modeled in the game. From prop planes to jet fighters. Ground bases with elaborate SAM defenses to aircraft carriers floating in the Mediterranean Sea.

The game is customizable as well, within the existing equipment parameters, so you can make custom OOB files & Scenarios.

War Over the Mideast includes 31 Scenarios – covering all sizes and situations, including a solo tutorial scenario plus specialized versions for both head to head play and vs. the computer AI.

Included are a range of maps covering the aerial conflict over the Middle East and the Mediterranean Sea.
This engine is a cross between Theater Operations and Tactical. You assign missions to your flights to achieve the over all objectives and you can then site back and watch them execute the plans. However, if you wish to drop in and take control of specific situations as they unfold you are able to do so. Units are generally "flights" of aircraft numbering 2-4 units and single helicopters.
As mentioned, this title can be played against the computer AI or other people. For the human aspect you can connect via a LAN or over the Internet. The Modern Air Power engine is a Pauseable real-time engine that allows you to play in 1:1 or up to 10x compressed speed... to move things along a bit faster if so desired. The game provides 5 different zoom levels to navigate around the battle space and an additional "jump map" to get a good "overview".

To be honest, this series has not been on my radar (see what I did there) as I really didn’t think it would be within my wheelhouse of interest. However, after reading that Mr. Tiller actually did this in relation to his work with the air force, my interest is piqued. And as I have stated before, I have yet to ever be disappointed in any of the WDS games. That said, I think I will give it a try while it is on sale and see if my interests broaden.
