Game of the Week, Apr 28 - May 4

Strap in as we head for the skies in this weeks Game of the Week - Modern Air Power: War Over Vietnam. This title will be on sale for 25% off normal pricing now through Sunday, May 4th.

After Korea, America was organized, trained and equipped to deter and, if necessary, to fight a global thermonuclear conflict against the Soviet Union. In 1965 America found itself thrust unexpectedly into a conventional war against a small Asian country that was well-supplied by China and Russia. The US Air Force and Navy evolved gradually and painfully into air forces capable of flying and fighting major air campaigns against the rapidly developing integrated air defenses over Hanoi and Haiphong. Mounting aircraft losses, inconclusive results from massive air strikes, political difficulties at home and across Southeast Asia and growing numbers of American prisoners of war defined the challenge air planners faced. Can you plan and orchestrate effective air missions against one of the most dense and lethal integrated air defense systems on the face of the earth? Or can you command the North Vietnamese air defenses and inflict another Dien Bien Phu on the Yankee Air Pirates?

This series was one of John Tiller's favorites, and one he worked extensively on and over the years with the US Air Force. The lead scenario designer for the series was Mo Morgan, who also worked with the Air Force in managing the use of these applications in their environment. You can read a bit more about that in the Design Notes.

War Over Vietnam covers modern air combat in this theater from 1964 - 1972. You will see a wide variety of weapon systems and air operations modeled in the game. From prop planes to jet fighters. Ground bases with elaborate SAM defenses to aircraft carriers floating in the South China Sea.

The game is customizable as well, within the existing equipment parameters, so you can make custom OOB files & Scenarios.

War Over Vietnam includes 28 Scenarios – covering all sizes and situations, including a solo tutorial scenario plus specialized versions for both head to head play and vs. the computer AI.

The game map includes North Vietnam and portions of Laos, Thailand and China.
This engine is a cross between Theater Operations and Tactical. You assign missions to your flights to achieve the over all objectives and you can then site back and watch them execute the plans. However, if you wish to drop in and take control of specific situations as they unfold you are able to do so. Units are generally "flights" of aircraft numbering 2-4 units and single helicopters.
As mentioned, this title can be played against the computer AI or other people. For the human aspect you can connect via a LAN or over the Internet. The Modern Air Power engine is a Pauseable real-time engine that allows you to play in 1:1 or up to 10x compressed speed... to move things along a bit faster if so desired. The game provides 5 different zoom levels to navigate around the battle space and an additional "jump map" in the lower right portion of the screen to get a good "overview".

Here's some video content to highlight a good portion of the subject matter:
