Game of the Week, Nov 11 to 17
Hi everyone,
This week, Wargame Design Studio shines a spotlight on Modern Campaigns: North German Plain '85, an operational Cold War-era game set in 1985. In this hypothetical conflict, NATO and Warsaw Pact forces face off across the flat, tank-friendly North German plains, in what could have been a high-stakes battle for European dominance.
Game Overview
Modern Campaigns: North German Plain '85 plunges players into an alternative history scenario where Warsaw Pact forces surge across the inter-German border in the summer of 1985. The master map features over 136,000 hexes, stretching from Berlin to the Rhine, with detailed landscapes ideal for intense armored warfare. As you command either NATO or Warsaw Pact forces, you’ll make strategic decisions that could shift the course of history.
Modern Campaigns: North German Plain '85 is the brand new 4.05.1 version.
There are 54 Scenarios included. The longest scenario is 161 turns, with most scenarios a very playable sub-25 turns.
The tables of organization reflect the equipment used by each formation across all combatants. You will find a range of national forces: Soviet, East German, Polish, United States, British, West German, Canadian, French, Dutch, Danish, and Belgian.
The game represents an obviously hypothetical Cold War gone Hot situation, but it is based on the available historical plans and deployments. There are even rules for the unthinkable: chemical and nuclear munitions. Players can ultimately decide whether to use these shock weapons, or not.
We included some documentation and notes with this title, you can review each by clicking on the links below.
There have been a range of books covering both the forces of NATO and the Warsaw Pact in the 1980’s, as well as works of fiction that extrapolated what a theater-wide war in Europe would look like. Following are some representative books for anyone that would like some more background on this perilous period. You can click on the book images below to be taken to Amazon, where applicable.

We hope you enjoy this week’s Game of the Week, Modern Campaigns: North German Plain '85. Like all WDS titles, there is a lot of game play included at a very attractive price.
Ah, it will be like meeting an old friend. Can’t resist. Now I have all the Modern Campaigns save Korea ’85. NGP is outstanding. Thanks,
Thanks Rich, maybe i will have a go at it. I LOVE Danube Front so thats one reason.
Hi Jens, the answer is similar to that we give with Fulda Gap. While the map is part of the larger Danube Front master map the scenarios are where you see the difference. The scenarios cover different force mixes and different situations. And even where a sector is included in a DF scenario, the smaller scenarios are not. So, while there is some overlap of content, all of this is definitely not part of the DF game.
Yes, Me again. This is one i dont have, surprise, suprise, but i do have Danube Front, of course. So my question is, do i really need this one? Everything about North Front is already included in Donau…
