Civil War Battles 4.05.6 Updates

Today we’re bringing you version 4.05.6 for the complete Civil War Battles series. All updates are now available. Campaign Peninsula received its update on Monday alongside its Game of the Week promotion, and today’s releases complete the series.

This round brings refinements to artillery combat, opportunity fire, and retreat behavior, together with a new fire-range highlight and several bug fixes. Here’s a closer look at what’s included.

Important: finish all games currently in progress before installing 4.05.6. This update moves the Parameter Data (PDT) files to version 11 and will break ongoing games, including PBEM matches. Please coordinate with your opponents before updating. See the Civil War Battles update page for the installation guidance.

What’s changed

Here’s a snippet from the latest Campaign Peninsula changelog, showing the engine changes in this update cycle along with that title’s content changes. Each game’s own changelog has its full details.

Artillery receives several adjustments. The strength multiplier used specifically for fire-density checks has been reduced from 80 to 50, while a change to the fractional-loss calculation reduces gun losses from counter-battery fire. A new artillery-fire parameter in the PDT file also allows adjustment of the values used when calculating ranged fire against artillery. Fixes address the artillery proportional opportunity-fire multiplier and ammunition losses when artillery is overrun.

Opportunity-fire hexes are now processed in a shuffled order, replacing the previous sequence that worked across the map from the upper left to the lower right.

The terrain-randomization adjustment improves the map’s appearance. For terrain such as forests and fields, the engine selects an appropriate image tile from the corresponding graphics file. Previously, neighboring hexes could use the same tile repeatedly, creating noticeable patterns. Improved randomization makes those tile selections more varied, giving the map a more natural appearance.

Movement and retreat receive attention as well. Retreat and rout pathfinding has been improved, and recovery from Movement Disruption now has a check to ensure it occurs on the following turn. Units must also have a strength of at least 10 men to exert a zone of control.

For a quick check of your firing reach, Shift + F now highlights fire range. There’s also a fix for the Reachable Hexes display and a correction that prevents a unit in Line from retreating across a hexside bridge after losing a melee.

Documentation has been updated, and the Campaign Peninsula package includes master-map corrections. Check the individual changelogs for content changes specific to your other games.

Getting the updates

The updates are free for existing owners and can be downloaded from the Civil War Battles update page, where you’ll also find the changelogs for each title. Follow the installation instructions there, especially if you’re returning to an older installation. You can check your current version under Help → About in the game.

If you missed Monday’s announcement, Campaign Peninsula is this week’s Game of the Week and already includes the 4.05.6 update.
